LIONS CLUB OF FISH HOEK EYE CLINIC

GOAL OF THE PROJECT

To establish and fully equip

An Optometric Clinic

An Eye Clinic for Cataract Operations

that are self-sustaining and that cater for the needs of the indigent community, thus assisting in the alleviation of the ever growing need to eliminate preventable blindness

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

It is estimated (1999 Government Census) that of the total population of the Western Cape Province of South Africa of 3,956,875 that 80% are estimated to be indigent - that is approximately 3,165,500

Number of blind people due to cataracts

15,828

Number of new people due to Cataracts each year

3,166

Number of Cataract operations done in 1998

2,969

Cataract surgery rate per 1 million population in 1998

998

Number of Cataract operations that need to achieve CSR of 2000

6331

We should aim for a Cataract surgery rate of 6,330 per annum. At present the Western Cape Administration has stopped all Cataract operations due to a lack of funds and there are people going BLIND every day because of this.

If Lions can, together with outside sponsorship, establish self-sustaining EYE CLINICS in our region where Eye Examinations and Cataract Operations can be funded and performed we would be able to assist and alleviate blindness of those unfortunate people throughout our community who urgently require eye care.

The Lions Club of Fish Hoek took the initiative in September 1996 and established an Optometric Clinic at the False Bay Hospital that previously had no facilities available for eye examinations or operations. Spectacles are dispensed from OPERATION BRIGHTSIGHT to those indigents who require them.

The LIONS CLUB OF FISH HOEK have embarked on a campaign to raise funds and to obtain equipment to fully equip not only the OPTOMETRIC CLINIC but a CATARACT OPERATING FACILITY as well. In order to make this project a reality we need EQUIPMENT and FINANCIAL assistance to subsidize not only the disposable materials used during the operations but to also equip the facilities.
